Artist Statement

This body of art explores the use of everyday materials and found objects; through techniques of weaving, sewing, and repetitive process. The sculptural and fiber-based work is permeated with historic and contemporary African influences, particularly utilizing the symbol of the Nkisi and the work of contemporary artist El Anatsui. My work in collage and assemblage began with a desire to approach the creation of painting in the same method as sculpting. This work explores surface, color and dimension and is influenced by Robert Rauschenberg and Kurt Schwitters.
